Fresher Resume Format (India)

Placement season rewards preparation. A fresher resume has one job: convince a recruiter or a campus shortlisting system that you can do the work, despite having little or no full-time experience. The format below is the widely accepted one-page structure for freshers in India, whether you are sitting for a campus drive or applying off-campus.
What order should the sections follow?
One page, single column, in roughly this order — moving your strongest section higher:
- Header: name and contact details.
- Education with CGPA or percentage.
- Projects — your substitute for work experience.
- Internships and industrial training.
- Skills, grouped by category.
- Positions of responsibility.
- Achievements and certifications.
Freshers do not need an experience section with a placeholder, a summary paragraph, or a references line. If a section would be empty or generic, delete it — a tight one-pager reads far better than a padded two-pager, and placement teams skim resumes fast.
Header: contact details, nothing more
Your name, phone number, a professional email address, and links to LinkedIn and GitHub (or a portfolio) are enough. Add your city and state; skip the full postal address. Leave out the photo, date of birth, and parents' names — corporate and IT recruiters in India do not expect them, and photos can break resume parsing.
Education: when should you include CGPA?
List your degree, institute, and graduation year in reverse-chronological order. Include your CGPA if it clears the common shortlisting cutoffs — many campus drives filter at thresholds the company sets — or whenever the employer asks. If your CGPA is modest, state it once without emphasis and let projects carry the resume. Class 10 and 12 percentages are worth a line while you are a student; drop them after your first job.
Projects: your experience substitute
Projects are the heart of a fresher resume — they are the closest thing you have to work experience, so write them like work experience. Two to four projects, each with a short title, the technologies used, and two to four bullets describing what you built and what it achieved.
- Start bullets with action verbs: built, designed, automated, deployed.
- Attach a number where honest: users, requests handled, accuracy, load time.
- Link the GitHub repository or a live demo so claims are verifiable.
- Prefer projects relevant to the role over your oldest coursework.
A weak project line says 'Made a website using React.' A strong one says what problem it solved and proves it: 'Built a hostel mess feedback portal in React and Firebase; 400+ students used it in the first month.' The difference is specificity, and it costs nothing but attention.
Internships, skills, and responsibility
Internships go above projects if they are substantial — a named company, real deliverables — and below otherwise. Format them exactly like jobs: organization, role, dates, and outcome-focused bullets. For skills, group by category (languages, frameworks, tools) and list only what you can discuss in an interview. Positions of responsibility — coordinating a fest, leading a club or society, organizing a hackathon — show ownership; give the strongest one a quantified bullet rather than listing ten titles.
Achievements and certifications
Keep this section short and concrete: hackathon results, competitive programming ratings, scholarship or rank achievements, and certifications that match the role. Name the issuing platform and year. Skip participation certificates — recruiters read this section for signal, and diluting it with routine entries weakens the genuine wins.
What should you leave out?
- A photo — not expected for corporate or IT hiring in India.
- Full postal address, date of birth, marital status, and other biodata-era fields.
- A generic objective ('seeking a challenging role...') that says nothing specific.
- Hobby lists with no evidence behind them.
- Fancy multi-column graphics that resume parsers cannot read.
The declaration line ('I hereby declare that the above information is true...') deserves its own note. It is still customary in some Indian contexts — certain placement cells, government forms, and older institutions expect it — but it is optional in modern corporate hiring and most recruiters simply skip past it. If nobody has asked for it, that line is better spent on a project bullet.
Campus placement vs off-campus applications
For campus drives, the placement cell's rules win. If it prescribes a format or a required CGPA field, follow it exactly — shortlists are often generated mechanically from those fields. Companies visiting campus also screen fast, so lead with the section that matches their role.
Off-campus, your resume meets applicant tracking systems first. Keep the layout single-column with standard headings, export a text-based PDF, and mirror keywords from each job description in your skills and project bullets. ResumeWizard's one-page templates handle the formatting side, so your effort goes into the content.
Frequently asked questions
- Should I put my CGPA on my resume?
- Include your CGPA when it is strong — commonly taken as roughly 7.0 or above on a 10-point scale — or whenever the employer or placement cell asks, since many campus drives shortlist by cutoff and omitting it can disqualify you. If your CGPA is low but your projects are strong, list education briefly and let the projects lead.
- Is the declaration line still required on a fresher resume?
- No employer requires it in modern corporate hiring, and it costs a line you could spend on a project bullet. It remains customary in some Indian contexts — certain placement cells and government applications still expect the 'I hereby declare' statement with date and signature. Include it only when a format explicitly asks; otherwise leave it out.
- How many projects should a fresher list?
- Two to four, each with three or four bullets. Pick projects that match the role you are applying for, name the technologies used, and describe a concrete outcome — users served, performance improved, a working deployment. One substantial project described well beats six one-line course assignments, and a GitHub or live demo link makes each one verifiable.
- Can a fresher resume be two pages?
- Keep it to one page. Recruiters and placement teams scan fresher resumes quickly, and without full-time experience there is rarely enough substantive material to justify a second page. If you are spilling over, cut the objective statement, older school details, and hobby lists before touching projects, internships, or skills — those are the sections that get you shortlisted.
